TURKINGTON TURNS UP THE HEAT WITH DOUBLE THRUXTON PODIUM
BLISTERING PACE IN SCORCHING HAMPSHIRE REIGNITES CHARGE FOR TEAM BMW STAR
Colin Turkington racked up his 125th and 126th BTCC podiums on Sunday as the UK’s top motorsport series took place at a sun soaked Thruxton. Securing a pair of second places, fastest lap in race one, alongside fifth in race 3, Turkington celebrated his most successful weekend to date, storming up the Championship standings from 10th to 5th. His points tally of 47 was the best of any driver at the event and leaves him just 18 points shy of the lead.
PASSION AND PACE
The successful combination of Turkington and West Surrey Racing remains one of the best. Their determination to bounce back from a frustrating Donington Park was clear to see and they left Thruxton with the BMW 1 series lapping faster than it ever has around the Hampshire venue.
It was clear to see that see that Colin was a man on a mission from the outset, his quiet and steely concentration making a loud impression on the track. His times in both FP1 and FP2 suggested a challenge for pole, as he claimed that confidence in the BMW was high and the optimum window of performance was not too far away.
FRONT ROW FEVER
Qualifying confirmed this confidence as Turkington smashed the lap record two times over in a bid to claim his first pole position of 2018. A late charge from rival Matt Neal was just enough to pip him to the top spot, but Turkington was more than delighted with a front row start.
BLUE SKIES AND CHAMPAGNE SHOWERS
The pace of the BMW on Sunday was exceptional, allowing Turkington to break free from the pack in race 1 and keep the pressure on leader Matt Neal. Smashing the race lap record as he went, Colin also secured an additional championship point for the fastest lap.
The second race revealed even more impressive pace from the Team BMW 1 series, finishing P2 with 66kgs of success ballast on the hard tyre. Considering this to be one of the most challenging circuits and tyre options for the BMW 1 series; the current form and pace of Turkington has got the pundits talking.
“I knew what I had to do at Thruxton and this was the event that could either make or break my 2018 championship attack. It was important to focus on my performance behind the wheel and deliver the maximum from my car.
Team BMW did a fantastic job in preparing a car that gave me confidence to really attack the high speed corners.
I was able to test the limits from the beginning on Saturday and the balance by the end of race 3 was as close to perfect as I think we’ll ever get at Thruxton!
We came, we saw and we conquered!
It’s been a special weekend, but it didn’t just happen by chance. It was the result of extreme hard work, dedication and expertise. To finally get a reward for our efforts is a great feeling. We needed that!
Second place in race 1 secured me my 125th BTCC career podium and as good as that looks, I’m keen to keep counting!
In just over two weeks it’s all systems go again at Oulton Park, a circuit I love for its technical layout where the driver can make a real difference. Ballast laden cars tend to suffer more here with the slower corners and hairpin bends, but I’m hoping that will play to my favour for qualifying and race 1. We’ll be pushing for the podium once more and chasing that first win of 2018.”
