SUPREME TURKINGTON STORMS TO CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
BMW STAR PULLS OFF ‘CLASSIC TURKINGTON’ WITH COMMANDING VICTORY AND PODIUM AT SCORCHING OULTON PARK
Colin Turkington thrust himself to the top of the British Touring Car Championship leader board on Sunday with passion and precision. In front a huge crowd at a sun-drenched Oulton Park, Turkington claimed victory in race 2 and a further podium in the third race of the day. Maintaining his blistering form, the BMW star was once again the highest points scorer for the second consecutive weekend.
Looking racy from the off, he made clear his intentions in race 1, carefully making his way through the field to finish 6th. It then became a ‘text book Turkington’ in race 2 with the former double champion’s distinctive intelligent and classy race craft thrusting him into the lead early on. He was untouchable from here on in, eventually crossing the line 5.3 seconds ahead of the rest.
BMW LEAD THE WAY
Team BMW now sit top of the Teams standings after an incredible 1-2-3 result in the final race of the day, as Colin Turkington secured third place behind his BMW team mates. After starting in 7th, the BMW driver appeared to be a man on a mission once more, and after some further impressive overtaking, he took the chequered flag to record his 128th BTCC career podium.
“Oulton Park was a huge reward for the extreme dedication and hard work by Team BMW throughout the past few months. You don’t achieve results like that by chance; success is a product of continued commitment and effort. In this case it was richly deserved.
We knew there was potential for a good haul of points, but you have to grab those opportunities by the scruff of the neck. It’s one thing to see an opportunity but quite another to convert it into something tangible.
We found the magic ingredient with my car for race 2 and I knew from the first lap I had to strike. I was enjoying myself out there and as a racing driver there is no better feeling than that. Every win in the BTCC is a great moment but because of how competitive things are these days, they seem to be harder and harder to come by. I’ve been putting everything into this campaign, so to finally get my first one in 2018 was extra special and an emotional occasion for everyone around me.
The improvements to the car just kept coming throughout the day and by race 3, although we were laden with success ballast, the BMW was mega. It puts a huge grin on your face when you have a car that feels that planted in the sweet spot.
The BMW podium lockout was incredible and provided a wonderful tonic to each and every member of the team.
We have been pushing on with our engineering developments throughout Thruxton and Oulton Park and yes that fills us with confidence but we won’t be standing still.
What was good enough to win last weekend won’t be enough for Croft, so it’s crucial to keep the head down, keep the thinking cap on and keep the pressure on.”
