TOP OF THE TABLE TURKINGTON IN THE GROOVE BUT INSISTS NOW IS THE TIME TO WORK HARDER THAN EVER
It’s been a quick turnaround for drivers and teams of the British Touring Car Championship as the next installment of the 2018 season continues this weekend. Heading North to Yorkshire for rounds 13, 14 and 15, the series will make its annual visit to Croft marking the half way point of the 30 race championship.
It’s been an exciting and unpredictable sequence of events so far but one thing has remained constant: Turkington’s work ethic. His current form is surely testament to this and a shining example of the success that can be achieved when you put the right ingredients together.
SUCCESS: A MIND GAME?
Combined with Team BMW, the pairing is a force to behold. It’s clear to see the chemistry between car, driver and team, and their unwavering dedication and passion is surely the reason they have become one of the most successful partnerships in BTCC history.
In a motorsport series that throws up many highs and lows, Turkington’s mental strength has also often been highlighted. Along with his intelligent race craft, the former double champion is forever testing the limits, hunting opportunities for gain and hungry to learn. Thrusting himself to the top of the championship standings last time out, he made sure to show his intentions for Croft.
Turkington returns to Croft this weekend with both his qualifying and race lap record from 2014 in the BMW still standing. A circuit he has enjoyed many successes at in the past, Croft plays an important role in drawing a line under the first half of the season. Keen to keep the pressure on until then, Turkington insists that although they have been doing well, now is not the time to simply ‘roll out and go’. Maintaining it’s the call to work harder than ever, the Team BMW driver remains completely focused on his own performance.
“We’ve been doing a great job and soaking up the success that followed was an important tonic. It was good for all of us.
But as I said before, what was good enough last time out, won’t be good enough next time out. We must keep pushing and hunting out performance. We need to work harder than ever.
The attitude within Team BMW is one I thrive on. We hadn’t even packed up at Oulton Park and Dick (Bennetts) was already deep in conversation about improvements for Croft!
I like to think of it as another technical circuit. There are a few sections where you can be brave and try to find an edge on the other guys.
My record there is the strongest of any driver but I won’t be resting on those laurels. It’s crucial to push on and return this weekend with the same potent hunger that got me my first ever BTCC podium there in 2002.
We’ll be carrying maximum success ballast for qualifying and race 1 but I’ll be going there with the same mentality and desire. The BMW carried it incredibly well at Oulton Park in the third race and it was a good test for us to get the setup right this weekend.”
