BRDC SILVER STAR GLORY FOR TURKINGTON
After an epic attempt to clinch the 2016 BTCC Crown at Brands Hatch yesterday, the former double Champ was today announced as the worthy winner of the 2016 BRDC SILVER STAR.
It has been confirmed as the closest result in its history, but Turkington’s two wins on Sunday at the season finale was enough to pip Gordon Shedden to the Silver Star Crown by only 2 points.
A well-deserved reward for a mammoth effort this season, Turkington has been the standout BTCC performer of late. Starting round 30 of 30 only 10 points off the Championship lead, it was incredible to think that he was forced to withdraw from three rounds earlier in the year.
Releasing the news on social media this afternoon Turkington described himself as “ecstatic”.
“This was the most awesome news to receive today as I landed in Belfast. To beat Gordon, Sam and Matt is almost unbelievable but also testament to the title challenge we mounted from Oulton Park onwards. I am absolutely thrilled and honoured.”
Each year the BRDC celebrates and recognises the achievements of its Members with the BRDC Awards. The most coveted of these is the Gold Star, Silver Star and Gold Medal, but there are also 21 other awards to be won.
Although the Gold Star is regarded as the British Racing Drivers’ Club’s pre-eminent award for success in International races, the Silver Star, first introduced 36 years ago and awarded to the BRDC Member who has been the most successful at the highest level in National racing, is much sought after by Touring Car, GT and Formula 3 drivers.
The second time he will be awarded this most prestigious award, Turkington is expected to receive the Star in person later this year at the annual BRDC ceremony – Grand Connaught Rooms London.
