Turkington claims maiden Historic Victory at Donington Park.
It was a great couple of days for Colin Turkington over the Bank Holiday weekend as he secured his first piece of silverware in 2016, finishing 3rd overall in the Super Touring Car Trophy and 1st in Class.
Driving an ex DTM (Steve Soper) BMW E30 owned by Mark Smith and run by Amspeed, Turkington stunned the paddock with a lap time only 0.302 seconds off pole position, securing him P3 on the grid. Competing against the much “younger” BTCC Super Touring Cars, it was a huge achievement for the Amspeed run BMW, as Turkington displayed his class in an immaculately turned out car.
Starting in third position on the grid for the rolling start race on Sunday afternoon, Turkington was in superb company as some of the most iconic BTCC Touring Cars of all time took to the track. It was in this race that Colin delivered the car’s best lap time of 1:13.050.
After falling behind Touring car veteran Patrick Watts on the first busy turn at Redgate, Turkington hunted him down, eating chunks out of Watts’ lead and finally reclaiming his podium position with 6 laps to go.
It was a moment to celebrate as Colin received his 3rd place trophy for the overall result and class win.
Turkington felt right at home with Amspeed and is keen to express his gratitude to Mark and Arran Smith.
” I had such a fantastic time at the Historic Festival and thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Donington. The E30 is one of my all time favourite BTCC race cars and it was simply amazing to drive. I was blown away by the speed of the car and by how beautifully it handled.
The team is run to a very high standard and the level of preparation with these cars is second to none. I would like to thank Mark Smith for offering me the opportunity to drive his special machine and giving me a taste of the Super Touring Car Championship.”

Colin will now turn his attention to his own preparation for the next three rounds of the British Touring Car Championship at Andover’s Thruxton this weekend.
