CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER TURKINGTON STAYS ON TOP
WEEKEND OF ‘GRAFTING’ NETS ANOTHER PODIUM FINISH TO KEEP TURKINGTON AHEAD OF THE PACK AS THE BTCC ENTERS SUMMER RECESS
Team BMW’s Colin Turkington increased his championship lead by 7 points after a controlled and consistent weekend at Croft. The former Champion battled hard to ensure he entered the summer break on top of the standings.
A WINNING MINDSET
Turkington’s form has been impressive of late and he delivered a sensational lap in qualifying to put the ballast laden BMW in sixth position. In the build up to Croft Colin insisted that despite their recent success, he would work harder than ever and that commitment certainly paid off.
The level of competition continues to increase with each meeting and had the team stood still with their developments, a completely different set of results could have unfolded. Instead, they were able to grow their championship lead and stash away valuable points.
The sun scorched the sky on race day and track temperatures rose to 42 degrees by mid afternoon. Putting the tyres under incredible stress, the heat was also prevalent up and down the paddock. Keeping his cool, Turkington drowned out the distractions and ensured he delivered what he set out to achieve. By claiming his 129th BTCC podium in race 2, his 50th fastest lap, alongside two top 5 finishes, Colin secured a quality and consistent trio of points.
With the first 15 of 30 races now run, it’s time to take stock, rest, reset and prepare for the second half of the season.
“Did we find the magic with the BMW 1 series at Croft? No, but we grafted extremely hard and I often say that it’s the meetings where you’re up against it, back to the wall, but come out the other side with a strong set of results, counts for far more at the end of the season.
Managing three top 5 finishes together is a fantastic result, so to do that after arriving with full Championship ballast was a great achievement. My team turned over every stone to perfect the car.
On full ballast it’s easier to lose points than gain them, so looking back we exceeded our target. That’s a very positive way to end the first half of the season.
I always knew that qualifying would dictate the direction of my weekend and we delivered when it mattered. It’s extremely satisfying to look back and see that.
We knew we had to raise the game.
We have two full test days at Snetterton in advance of the race and that’s just what we need. It’s valuable track time that will hopefully allow us to find the sweet spot and push on when the season resumes at the end of July.
Team BMW sit top of the standings and we should all be proud of our success so far.
The competition is fierce and although challenging, it encourages us to keep improving. “
